HSE University Ranks 115th in RePEc World Ranking
The RePEc rating (Research Papers in Economics) is based on publication activity data in the field of economics and related disciplines. In recent years, HSE University has consistently ranked first among Russian universities, and it continues to steadily climb the global ranking, overtaking well-known, centuries-old foreign universities. In the latest European ranking, HSE University took 46th place. In the world ranking, the university has ranked 115th (an increase of 4 places in the space of one month).
RePEc economists are ranked by 36 different parameters related to the quantity and quality of their publications, as well as their citations, after which an overall rating is calculated. Economic institutions and universities are then ranked based on the affiliation of the authors.
All information about the publications of registered RePEc users is collected automatically, so the rating reflects the real state of affairs in the discipline. HSE University runs a regular campaign to register new employees with RePEc; currently 739 people are affiliated with HSE University (510 of whom have publications). Most institutes and departments of economics generally have less staff (dozens), with the exception of major institutions and universities such as the World Bank, the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER, USA), the Institute for Labour Economics (IZA, Germany), the International Monetary Fund, the Federal Reserve (USA), and the London School of Economics.
Maria Yudkevich, Vice Rector, HSE University
Although the quantitative indicators of HSE University definitely give the University certain advantages over small economics departments, progress in the ratings is primarily related to the improvement of our qualitative indicators. The publications of our faculty members in leading economic journals play an important role here—achieving this factor is no longer just a fantasy for us. Thus, this year, two publications by HSE University staff – Pavel Andreyanov (Faculty of Economic Sciences) and Emiliano Catonini (ICEF) – were accepted for publication in one of the five leading economics journals, The Review of Economic Studies, and the work of Eren Arbatli (Faculty of Economic Sciences) has been published in another top five journal, Econometrica.
