Students Come from Far and Wide to Study Big Data Systems
The Master’s programme in Big Data Systems at the Higher School of Economics focuses on the value aspect of big data for large enterprises and the implementation of big data technology in enterprises. As a leader in big data studies, HSE draws students from around the world to its two-year programme, which is taught in English and maintains a number of partnerships with leading international universities.
Two current students are Odeyemi Ronke, who comes from Nigeria where she earned a National Diploma in Business Administration from Yaba College of Technology, and Chandadevi Giri, who hails from India, where she previously studied Chemical Engineering. Both students share their thoughts about what drew them to HSE to study big data, what they hope to gain from the programme and what advice they would give to prospective international students.
— How did you become interested in big data? It's a new area, although one that is developing very rapidly.
Odeyemi Ronke: My passion for computers started at early age in primary school after receiving an award for best student in computer studies. My tasks at my former place of work left me with no option than to take up a course in involving large transactions. Courses in big data are not common right now, but being a big data analyst is a big profession and brings a lot of opportunities in Nigeria.
Chandadevi Giri: We have entered an era of big data, and it is the next big thing in the business world. It brings a lot challenges and opportunities. The digital world has impacted the life of both individuals and industries. Big data can bring about substantial cost reductions, improvements in the time required to execute a computing task, or new product and services. Since data will continue to drive business in the coming years, and companies will rely more on expert professionals who know how to deal with data efficiently, I decided to pursue a career in the field of big data.
— Is there anything specific about big data that is interesting for you?
Odeyemi Ronke: There are so many things that interest me about big data. For example, big data collection, processing support and storage in heterogeneous networks. The big data course provides a direct solution to the menace of corruption that has crept into the Nigerian economy; after my course, I intend to develop software to track, monitor and control the inflow and outflow of funds in my country. I plan to commercialize this software as an entrepreneur.
— What skills and knowledge help you to live and study in a foreign country?
Chandadevi Giri: While moving to another country, you have to be confident in yourself. Self-confidence is important and has made my life easy. Other skills that help me is the ability to adapt to a new place, language, culture and share knowledge and experience with other people.
The international atmosphere gave me the chance to discover the cities, culture and ways of life in Russia, and I am thankful to HSE and its staff who welcomed me in their community and made it comfortable for me to adjust to life here.
— Do you have any advice for students who are considering going abroad for their studies?
Odeyemi Ronke: It’s important to make an effort to perform well academically. I recommend that prospective students sharpen their English proficiency. They should also be willing, creative and have a positive mind to contribute in whatever way they can.
Chandadevi Giri: My advice for those students who hesitate to go abroad studies is challenge yourself; you never know until you try, so embrace the world and encourage yourself to face the challenges. Your life and attitude will change after a study abroad experience.
