Winner of the International KIVO Competition of Innovations in Education Announced in Nizhny Novgorod
The final 10 teams presented their projects to experts in a pitching session at the finals of the KIVO Competition of Innovations in Education. The project defence and award ceremony took place as a side event of the Global Impact Conference, an international platform that brings together experts in the field of sustainable development.
The Competition of Innovations in Education is a federal project of the Institute of Education. Both individual creators and teams can participate.
More than 6,000 projects have been received and assessed over KIVO’s nine-year history. In 2022, the organisers received 419 applications, including from Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Armenia, as well as Germany, France, Israel, Indonesia, Malaysia, and others as part of KIVO International. The finals of the competition were held in Nizhny Novgorod at the site of the new campus of Rosatom's corporate university, the Mayak Academy named after A D Sakharov.

It is important that KIVO has once again confirmed its international status at a time when the world is changing and new demands are being made on education. ‘Grassroots’ innovations, ie those initiatives that go from users to formal structures, respond well to the demands of society. They are the catalysts and drivers of educational change, but they need support. As a competition, we are building bridges between innovators from the Russian regions and other countries, and representatives of large international corporations that can provide this support.
This year, the competition’s partners were Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University (KazNPU), the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia, the Prosveshchenie Group of Companies, the Department of Education and Science of Moscow, Skolkovo Open University, MAXIMUM Educational Company, the Agency for Strategic Initiatives, the Association of Children's Goods Industry Enterprises, Impact Hub Moscow and Rosatom State Corporation.

Everyone has an interest in the development of education—the state, corporations, business and society. Innovative solutions are more important than ever before. It is through their implementation that education remains relevant and meets today's challenges.
More than 80 experts worked on the evaluation of projects. The biggest competition was in the categories New Methodologies (166 applications), New Skills, Competencies and Literacy (107 applications), Digital Transformation (67 applications) and TEACHing (61 applications).
‘Every year, a large percentage of projects are IT-related,’ notes Diana Koroleva. ‘It seems to me that there is another important trend this year: well-being, which has acquired a new connotation since the pandemic. In the post-pandemic reality, it is important for us to have comfortable interaction between participants of the educational process. For example, the ‘Education Preparedness Index in COVID-19 (EPIC)’ project from Yerevan assesses the readiness of the educational system to emergencies.
‘In addition, topics related to the “digital” sphere become more relevant every year. What is special is that our innovators are not just proposing digitisation, but a digital transformation of the actual process and the resources for it. For example, the idea of the Digital Mentors project is to train school librarians to become digital mentors for pupils and teachers.’

The level of the finalist projects is good; they are all interesting and, most importantly, very diverse. I also think this is important: education should be diverse, which means that methodology, content and technology are all important.

It is interesting that all the projects that made it into the final round reflect the current zeitgeist in one way or another. There are several projects related to inclusion; there are also projects aimed at increasing productivity and projects promoting different levels of communication between people.
I was particularly impressed by the Net Junior project; I was very pleased with the team of creators in addition to the relevance of the topic and the high degree of elaboration. In particular, Maxim Pichulev, who presented the project at the pitch, felt at ease and comfortable in the competition environment. I saw a character who was passionate about his idea and engaged in an open dialogue with the experts. This is exactly the level to which we aspire in the field of education.
The team project led by Maxim Pichulev won the audience award and a diploma in the category ‘Designing the Future Together’, which was presented by Anna Blyakhman, Director of HSE University-Nizhny Novgorod.

School students today lack a common information environment where they can work together on new projects and participate in competitions. On our web platform, pupils register, list their strengths, and get together to form teams. We are developing a system of communication with investors and in the future, hopefully, we will have a list of partners with whom participants can cooperate.
The team from Peter the Great St Petersburg Polytechnic University (SPbPU) with its LEAN.PRODUCTION project—a digital simulator for lean production training—was the winner of KIVO 2022. The creators of the project will receive an educational grant of 150,000 roubles from HSE University. In addition, the project won a nomination from the Prosveshchenie publishing house.

Initially, our simulator was part of an online training course, but then customers from the industry came to us and it was clear that the industry needed it too.

The HSE Faculty of Geography and Geoinformation Technology has become one of the organisers of the ‘Nature and Climate’ photography contest. The goal of the contest is to celebrate the beauty of nature and its connection with climate, as well as to showcase modern approaches to studying natural ecosystems and their role in climate regulation. The contest is open to all, and the best photographs will be displayed at an exhibition in September, timed to coincide with the fifth anniversary of the faculty.
Faculty of Computer Science Members Win Prizes in ICPC Challenge Championship
The International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) Challenge took place at the end of August. Unlike the traditional ICPC format, in which teams of three students solve a set of algorithmic tasks, participants of the ICPC Challenge must individually solve an optimisation problem that is relevant to science-driven industry, but which does not have an exact algorithmic solution. In the end, prize places were taken by Mikhail Gustokashin, Director of the Centre of Student Competitions at the HSE University Faculty of Computer Science (FCS), and Dmitry Rempel, student of the faculty.
‘Ecology Provides the Best Opportunities for Professional and Personal Development of Young People’
In early May, the HSE Institute of Ecology and the International Children's and Youth Award ‘Ecology is Everyone's Business’ held a joint seminar in Dagestan, where they discussed the launch of youth environmental projects for federal and international competitions. At the meeting, the Institute's experts presented methods of organising project activity in the field of ecology and sustainable development for educators and young people in Dagestan. Teachers and students from more than 50 schools, colleges and universities of the republic took part in the event.
‘The Competition Gave Young Researchers an Opportunity to Take the Initiative’
In September, HSE University announced the results of a competition of digital projects by early-career HSE scientists. The event was organised within the framework of the strategic project ‘Digital Transformation: Technologies, Effects, Efficiency’. The organisers selected 8 out of 22 applications. The research teams have already started to implement their projects, and the results will be presented at the end of November. The HSE News Service shares the details of three of the highest-scoring projects in the competition. The creators of the projects are staff members of the HSE Center for Language and Brain, MIEM, and the Faculty of Computer Science.

Data analysis enthusiasts from different regions of Russia and 13 foreign countries recently took part in the Data Analysis National Olympiad (DANO). The results of the first round will be announced on October 20th.

The results of the final round of the 2022 Econometrics Universiade have been announced. As always, ICEF undergraduate students are among the leaders – Vladimir Averin won the overall competition, while Gleb Kudryashov was also among the prize-winners.
Submarine and French Confectioner's Shop—Winners of the Top Class Research Competition Announced
This year’s final stage of Top Class, the All-Russian Competition of Schoolchildren’s Research and Projects, held by HSE University, has come to a close. About a thousand 8th—11th graders from 7 countries and 69 regions of Russia participated in the contest. The winners and runners-up were announced at the closing ceremony in the HSE Cultural Centre. They received special prizes from partner companies.
Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation Announces Winners of Two Innovation Competitions
The winners of the KIVO Education Innovation Competition and the Innovator’s Voice all-Russia contest of youth social and educational innovations have been announced. Both competitions were organized by HSE University: KIVO 2021 in partnership with the Rybakov Foundation with support from the Agency for Strategic Initiatives, and Innovator’s Voice with support from the Federal Agency for Youth Affairs.
Two Contestants Correctly Guess All Three Nobel Prize Winners in Economics
The two winners of the Andrej Bremzen competition to correctly predict all three awardees are Ivan Susin, a Research Assistant at the HSE International Laboratory for Experimental and Behavioural Economics, and Maxim Ananyev, a researcher at the University of Melbourne. They both named David Card, Joshua Angrist, and Guido Imbens, and will now receive prizes from the HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences.
