Eight works by students of the HSE Art and Design School are among the winners in the ‘Students’ category of the ADCR Awards, a Russian professional competition in the field of creativity, design and advertising. HSE students won all gold, silver and bronze awards. Many student works were also included in the shortlist of the competition, while Evgeny Kashirin, lecturer at the HSE Art and Design School, was named tutor of the year.
The ADC Russia Awards is a local branch of the Art Directors Club of Europe. Gold winners of ADC Russia get the opportunity to present their works for free at the ADCE Awards, one of the most prestigious international competitions, while Silver, Bronze and Shortlist nominees receive a discount for participation.
68 works from 111 students were submitted to the ADCR AWARDS 2022 competition in the ‘Young creative’ and ‘Students’ categories.
GOLD AWARD
Timofey Kirin. ‘Chocolate Bar’ chocolate festival. Curator: Evgeny Kashirin
Timofey developed the identity for the concept of the ‘Chocolate Bar’ festival—the first major festival of this kind in Russia, which could be held in Moscow. In addition to tastings and master classes from the world's most famous chocolatiers, festival guests can see chocolate sculptures, chocolate paintings and even chocolate clothes.
Timofey Kirin on his project
‘The idea was simple: to show an abundance of chocolate in a corporate style. I came up with the metaphor of “breaking a chocolate bar”— festival visitors can break off and take as much chocolate as they want, because it won't run out anyway. Initially, I thought of implementing all the graphics using 3D, but over time, I realised that we need 2D graphics, since they were easier to engage in all the style elements. I did not prepare for the competition, since the work was already assembled into a final presentation two months before applying to ADCR. I am very glad that the jury appreciated my identity!’
SILVER AWARD
Anastasia Maksimova. Biblio Unity book fund network. Curator: Pavel Borisovsky
The Biblio Unity project by Anastasia Maksimova is a concept of a new approach and philosophy of librarianship. Biblio Unity brings together existing library collections from different districts of the same city into a common mobile network. By combining book collections, libraries exchange not only books, but also experience, creating a flexible, transparent and friendly system for their visitors, which requires regular updates of the collections with relevant and modern literature.
BRONZE AWARDS
Evgenia Berezhnaya. Ethno Mehanika. Supervisor: Oksana Paley
Ethno Mehanika is a music festival showcasing new musicians in the genre of world music. It presents a kaleidoscope of sounds collected in different parts of the world. The festival perfectly combines East and West, punk and folk, meditative music and rock, pagan singing and trance, Arabic motifs and electro.
A square module in the form of a photo image of musicians was taken as the basis of the primary graphic element. In order to emphasise the features of the ethno-festival and highlight its multinational nature, the photos were collected in endless ornaments of different countries.
Evgenia Berezhnaya. #безнеловкихпауз (‘without awkward pauses’). Supervisor: Oksana Paley
The #безнеловкихпауз social project about sexual education for parents and children will help parents avoid awkward situations and start a dialogue with their child. Many people tend to feel shame and fear when talking about physicality and sexuality. Evgenia’s project will not notify parents about the problem, but induce a conversation to help parents build a trusting relationship with the child in the future.
Alisa Ignatieva. Skate Park ‘GORKI’. Curator: Evgeny Kashirin
The concept represents a space for professional and semi-professional skaters who want to immerse themselves in street culture. It’s a skate park for those who are tired of family-friendly places and are looking for something bold and free.
The purpose of the branding was to create a recognisable and bold visual representation of the place that will attract a young audience.
Maria Belozerova. 911. Curator: Leonid Slavin
911 is a brand of cleaning products for pets. The design is based on the metaphor of the ‘911’rescue service. Unlike typical house cleaning, pet care requires a quick response, an urgent solution. Therefore, the packaging of the 911 brand screams and rushes to help the buyer. The purpose of the packaging design is to draw customers' attention to the way the product is used by creating pictograms for each step.
The special award ‘Tutor of the Year’, which is aimed at encouraging talented teachers in creative education, was an innovation of the organising committee. Thanks to the outstanding results of his students in the competition, Evgeny Kashirin, curator of the ‘Communication Design’ track, became the first award holder in this category.
Evgeny Kashirin, curator of the ‘Communication Design’ track, congratulated the winners and gave advice to all students.
Evgeny Kashirin
‘First of all, I congratulate my students—Alina Lomaeva, Alisa Ignatieva, Georgy Sapozhkov and Timofey Kirin—on being shortlisted for ADCR 2022. The shortlist is a great indicator of how your work is evaluated by the industry, which means that you are already on the top.
Timofey Kirin won the gold! When the work of a second-year bachelor’s student takes gold in its category, it means a lot. Alisa Ignatieva won bronze! This bronze may be even more valuable than gold, since it was awarded to the work of a first-year bachelor’s student!
I keep telling everyone: student works are not a joke, and those who take them seriously achieve serious results and receive serious evaluation in the professional community.’
Alexander Alekseev, Chairman of the jury of the ADCR Awards competition, said, ‘All the prizes in the student category 'Graphic Design/Product Design' at the ADCR Awards 2022 (including the shortlist!) were won by students of the HSE Art and Design School. Next year, we aim to get awards in the ‘Communication ideas’ category.’
