The HSE has Become a Member of the WWW Consortium
The Higher School of Economics has become the first Russian organization to join the World Wide Web Consortium.
Every time you type ‘www’ in the address line of your web browser, you are using the results of work of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). The Consortium was created in 1994 as a consultation body for computer industry leaders. The largest international companies and research organizations use W3C to ensure the compatibility of their products and the implementation of new technology standards. Currently more than 350 organizations from 29 countries are members of the consortium. They include such giants as Microsoft, Oracle, IBM, HP, Google and Facebook. W3C brings together the latest experience and cutting-edge solutions related to the web, and the most renowned experts in this area participate in its work. The consortium is led by Timothy Berners-Lee, one of the inventors of the web and author of many developments in IT. The most successful example of the consortium’s work is the standardization of hypertext markup language (HTML) in 1996, which was a crucial step in the development of the Internet.
The HSE has signed an agreement to participate in the World Wide Web Consortium and has become the first Russian organization on the list of W3C members. Now HSE representatives can actively participate in the activities of W3C working groups, and give their suggestions as well as getting feedback on their work and receiving materials and solutions prepared by these groups.
The W3C believes that in the future, the development of the internet will be related to the concept of the Semantic Web. This is an addition to the existing Web,and is aimed at making the information placed on the internet more ‘comprehensible’ for computers. This means that software programmes will be able to find the necessary resources, process information, generalize data, reveal logical connections, make conclusions and then even take decisions based on those conclusions. It is believed that the Semantic Web will be a revolution for the web, and will create a new global informational infrastructure and lead to a more effective use of the snowballing volume of information currently available, including unstructured information.
Within the HSE, the Institute of Information Technologies is responsible for organizing our interaction with the consortium.
