HSE’s Best Teacher Results Announced
The Best Teachers 2017 competition at HSE recently reached its completion. Although the overall procedure this year was the same as it was in 2016, the financial terms changed – the bonuses for the winners have been increased. Vadim Radaev, First Vice Rector of HSE, told us about the vote and some of the perks for all of the winners.
Vadim Radaev
Firstly, let me note that, starting from 2016, we altered the voting procedure, thereby making it clearer, easier and faster for all those involved. The vote is now done online, through the LMS module – ‘Evaluate Your Courses’. Moreover, we merged the two main procedures: students can vote for the best teachers immediately after a compulsory evaluation their work and courses which is part of every module. Students had three weeks to vote and could make their choices anytime and anywhere. The turnout in 2016 was a nice surprise – 76% of all HSE students voted, while in previous years, the maximum turnout came to only 49%!
In 2017, the turnout was also high, with 80% of all students casting their votes. Tikhonov Moscow Institute of Electronics and Mathematics (MIEM HSE), ICEF, and HSE’s Faculty of Mathematics were the leaders in terms of participating students, with over 90% of them having voted.
As in previous years, the best teachers include winners of the student vote, winners of the alumni vote, and academic supervisors of students who have won Student Research Paper Competitions. Moreover, the total number of winners in 2017 went up to 518 (up from 464 winners in 2016).
The changes will undoubtedly be good news for the winners, as they have to do with the size of their monthly bonus. For full-time teachers and tutors, the bonus will be 35,000 roubles (30,000 last year); staff lecturers working part-time will receive 17,500 roubles a month (15,000 last year). Furthermore, we have a major innovation this year: if a full-time teacher is voted as one of the best for the third year in a row (in other words, in 2015, 2016, and 2017), their bonus will reach 60,000 roubles a month. For three-time winners who are employed part-time, their bonus shall come to 30,000 roubles.
All bonuses are assigned for one academic year – from September 1, 2017 until August 31, 2018.
The total number of bonuses for the best teachers has reached 442, with 132 of them receiving a double bonus as three-time winners. I would also like to note that we even have seven-time winners (since the vote has been held since 2011), and some of our colleagues have been chosen as the very best every year.
Congratulation to all winners!
