Sona Hovsepyan Dance School Wins 10 Gold Medals in Russian Tap-Dance Championships
The Russian Tap-Dance Championships are part of the XIII World Dance Olympiad. HSE tap dancers are always among the winners, but this year’s haul was particularly rich.
The World Dance Olympiad is one of Europe’s largest dance competitions – 25,000 participants from 50 countries take part in its different programmes, which include virtually all the different types of dance. The competition was held from 29 April to 11 May in the Sokolniki Congress and Exhibition Centre, and included musical dance, ethnic dance, jazz, modern, flamenco, hip-hop and other genres of dance, all performed by a wide range of participants of different ages.
The prize money totaled 1 million roubles, split between 19 different nomination categories.
The performance by the Sona Hovsepyan group from the HSE Dance Company proved a real success at the Russian Tap Dance Championships – the group gave 11 performances specially prepared for the Olympiad, and won 10 gold medals and the Grand Prix. The duo Alexander and Mikhail Lobod, who study at the HSE Lyceum, and HSE student Ekaterina Ivanova – were part of the tap-dance team and won first prize for their ‘Night City Rhythm’ and ‘Walk in Step Rhythm’. Sona Hovsepyan said that the performance lasted about 5 hours, and they had been rehearsing since the early morning. The tap-dancers are now getting ready for their next contest – the World Tap-Dance Championships, which are due to be held in Germany in December 2016.
