MIEM HSE Establishes Telecommunications Research Institute
The institute will conduct fundamental and applied research in the development, analysis, and application of communication technologies with their subsequent commercialisation, as well as train development engineers for the telecom industry. Professor Evgeny Koucheryavy, Director of the MIEM Telecommunications Research Institute, has spoken to the HSE News Service about the goals, objectives, strategy and structure of the new organisation.

Considering News Background Can Improve GDP Projections in Periods of Instability
The accuracy of Russian GDP forecasts during periods of instability improves in 45% of cases when news reports are taken into account. However, during more stable periods, this advantage nearly disappears. News provides an up-to-date view of the economy and enables quicker responses to emerging challenges. This was revealed by an analysis of over 500,000 news reports conducted by Ivan Stankevich and Natalia Makeeva of the HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences (FES), and Nikita Lyubaykin. The study results have been published in Voprosy Ekonomiki.

'I Would Like to Leave a Lasting Impact on Science'
Aibek Alanov pursues his own scientific research and leads two teams of scientists, one at HSE University and the other at AIRI. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, he explores the parallels between today's AI researchers and early 20th-century physicists, discusses generative models, and shares his passion for bachata partner dancing.

Research Centre for Cognitive Health and Intelligence Opens at HSE University
The new research subdivision will focus on both the fundamental and applied aspects of human intelligence studies. The goal is not only to investigate the brain's cognitive mechanisms but also to devise strategies for enhancing and sustaining cognitive well-being. Led by prominent Russian and international scientists, the centre will pursue several research areas with main foci on intellectual functions and their operation under various conditions, the mechanisms of language communication, bilingualism and cognitive reserve, and the role of sensorimotor systems in cognitive processes.

Scientists Disprove Bunkbed Conjecture
Mathematicians from Russia, including two HSE graduates, have disproven a well-known mathematical conjecture that, despite lacking solid proof, had been considered valid for 40 years. The ‘Bunkbed Conjecture’ belongs to percolation theory—a branch of mathematics that studies the formation of connected structures in independent environments.
